Lucky Me

Lucky Me

I’m writing to you from my desk in my living room, with a dog resting on my feet. There’s snow falling outside my window.

Yes, snow. In April. It was 70 degrees outside yesterday and now I’m wearing my softest socks and PJ’s. Michigan is weird.

More importantly, I’m writing from a place of gratitude. So much has happened in the last few months and I’ve been thinking about all the reasons I have to be grateful even as we grapple with a pandemic. There are too many to count, including but not limited to:

-My health and wellbeing, which has been consistent despite my going out among people almost every day for work.

-My ability to work at all, and mostly from home, with few hiccups considering how bad things could be.

-My family’s health and wellbeing, even though I miss them every single day. They make me laugh, patiently listen to my rants and remind me that I have a solid team in my corner no matter what.

-The aforementioned dog, who has also become family and charmed her way into my parents’ hearts. She drives me crazy when I’m on deadline but gives me an excuse to go outside at least twice a day. The evening cuddles are pretty nice too.

-The opportunity to tell meaningful and heartwarming (at least to me) stories five days a week.

-A kitchen full of groceries ready to become whatever I want.

-6+ years of wearing my natural hair so I don’t have to figure it out at the last minute.

-Friends who check on me even with crazy schedules of their own.

-Still reporting on Michigan’s campaign trail, even if it’s through the lens of COVID-19 now.

-Virtual wine nights.

-Awesome new shows and movies online. If you haven’t seen Unorthodox on Netflix yet, go see it! It’ll make you smile and cry.

-THERAPY. Such an important thing in and out of a pandemic.

-The opportunity to keep getting better at my job and with my storytelling.

-The promise of better days.

This pandemic has a lot of people down, and my heart goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one or been impacted by this virus. Whatever your circumstances, I hope you have a reason to smile.
