Burgess Brothers BBQ Sauce

Burgess Brothers BBQ Sauce

Not long ago some very nice people got in touch with me. They heard I like food (can't imagine where they got that impression) and asked if I'd like to try some barbecue sauce.

The Burgess Brothers, Jonathan and Matthew, are California natives and public servants (a firefighter and a law enforcement veteran, respectively) with a passion for food. They already have a restaurant in Sacramento and plenty of people have tried their barbecue, but then (I imagine) they thought about those of us not on the west coast and thought we might like to try it too!

So without further ado, here it is.

The good stuff.

The good stuff.

I went home for a weekend and did a barbecue with my parents to try it out. Threw it on some marinated ribs (never trust anyone who doesn't marinate their meat) and slow-cooked them on the grill for a few hours, bathing them in sauce every once in a while and with every turn.

The sauce itself is pretty good! I tend to like my sauce thick, but not too sticky, by the time I'm finished cooking with it. This particular blend is more vinegar-based, I believed, and it's on the thin side but certainly thick enough to do its job. It's very sweet with a hint of a sour flavor, well-seasoned, and stands up well after hours of slow cooking. I did add some extra seasoning because I like my food spicy, but for those with...cooler tongues, I think this is a great pantry staple.

Proceeds from the sauce sales go to various charitable organizations that the brothers are passionate about supporting, including Wounded Warrior Homes and the Firefighters Burn Institute. I'm all for supporting great causes, and I'm happy to eat delicious food to do it!

Hopefully we'll see more of the Burgess Brothers on the east coast in the near future. And for those in the Atlanta area who want to taste for themselves, the brothers will be sampling at Sam's Club (address here) the weekend of May 6th. I'll post more details as I receive them!
